NETWORKED MEDIA

WEEK 6!

Below are the 5 main media theories we looked at in week 6:
1. Technological Determinism
2. Cultural Materialism
3. Simulacra
4. Poststructuralism
5. Global Village

Hannah got the class to get into 5 groups, each group researched about one theory.  My group and I looked into ‘Technological Determinism’ and answered the following questions:

1. What you think the term means:
-Technological Determinism presumes that technology drives the development of its social structure and cultural values.
-Technical developments/changes, media or technology as a whole can be seen as key movers in history and social change.

2. Who are theorists who relate to this?
-Thorstein Veblen
-John Dewey
-William Ogburn
-Karl Marx
-Marshall McLuhan
3. Think of an example that helps demonstrate this?
‘Mobile Phones’ are a great example of Technological Determinism. Many years ago, a mobile phone was hardly used, and when it was, it was purely used to make phone calls. Nowadays, as technology is progressing and changing society, almost everybody has one. From a small gadget used for phone calls to now a smart phone used for lots more such as: applications, social media, texting and video calls.
